Pregnancy services

Pregnancy is an amazing and magical time and we aim to make your scan a quality and unique experience. We understand that you may wish to share your scanning appointment with other members of your family and are very welcome to bring them along with you.

At The Wilmslow Hospital, we offer a full range of maternity scans, delivered to you by our experienced, advanced ultrasound practitioners in a comfortable and safe environment. Using the latest technology, we are able to assess your baby’s development and identify any structural abnormalities or potential growth problems. All of our scans include a comprehensive and accurate medical report which you can share with your GP or midwife, if desired.

Pregnancy Scans available

Early Development Scan or Viability Scan (£95, twins £95)

In the first trimester, an Early Pregnancy Scan will allow you to assess the development of the baby from as early as six weeks. It will confirm that your pregnancy is healthy, ongoing and will calculate the date your baby is due. This is also sometimes referred to as a Viability Scan (confirming the viability of your pregnancy) or Dating Scan (to date your pregnancy). Early pregnancy scans are not usually offered through the NHS, however you can have one privately without affecting your NHS entitlement.

Nuchal Scan Combined Test (£160, twins £230)

After 11 weeks and three days, you will be able to have a specialised Nuchal Scan Combined Test which provides the most accurate (90% accuracy), non-invasive assessment of the risk of Downs, Edwards and Patau’s Syndromes and major heart defects. These tests are recommended by the National Screening Committee and the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE), and are not routinely offered in all hospitals. This test is also accurate in multiple pregnancies. All our Nuchal Scans are performed by Advanced Practitioners, certified by the Fetal Medicine Foundation.

Gender and Development Reassurance Scan (£95, twins £145)

After 17 weeks we can offer a Gender and Development Reassurance Scan to assist you in determining the sex of your baby. This will also incorporate an assessment of the baby’s development at this stage of the pregnancy.

Wellbeing, Growth and Reassurance Scan (£200, twins £250)

A Wellbeing, Growth and Reassurance Scan is important as it is used to monitor your pregnancy to accurately check the growth of your baby. It will allow for the assessment of the baby’s weight, position, placental flow and placental site. 3D/4D scans can be incorporated into a wellbeing scan, allowing you to capture fascinating images.

Detailed Anomaly Scan (including Cervical Length if required) (£135, twins £165)

This is a detailed examination of the anatomy of the baby. The scan follows best practice UK guidelines (BMUS, FASP and NICE) and is available to women between 18 and 21 weeks of pregnancy. This is a detailed scan which assesses the baby’s development, checking major organs and features.

Harmony Non-Invasive Pre-natal Testing (NIPT) (£480, twins £500)

The Harmony Prenatal Test is a new and highly accurate test that analyses your baby’s DNA in a sample of your blood to predict the risk of Down syndrome (trisomy 21) and two other genetic conditions, trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome) and trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome). The test is available from 10 weeks, offering greater clarity at an earlier stage of pregnancy.

Group B Streptococcus Test plus reassurance scan (£110, twins £145)

Group B Streptococcus Bacteria kills 75 newborn British babies a year and is the most common cause of bacterial infection in newborn babies in the UK. It also causes still births and preterm labour. The NHS does not routinely test for Group Strep B and a high percentage of pregnant women have ‘never heard’ about the bacteria which infects 700 newborn babies each year in Britain, yet the condition is usually preventable with antibiotic treatment for the mother during labour. Medical research shows that using a risk factor approach to prevent GBS infection in newborn babies would prevent up to 60% of cases. Two swabs (lower vaginal and rectal) taken at 35-37 weeks’ gestation best predict colonisation with GBS around the time of delivery.
