General enquiries

Urology specialists at The Wilmslow Hospital offer a range of care including screening, diagnosis and treatment for conditions such as urinary tract infections, prostate disorders, urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction.

  • Digital rectal examination (DRE) – the primary test for prostate disorders, the doctor will place their finger inside your rectum to assess any enlargement.
  • Blood tests – these include the prostate specific antigen (PSA) test.
  • Urine tests – you might have a flow rate test as well as pathology tests done on your sample.
  • Imaging – scans, including x-ray, ultrasound and MRI, are available to help diagnose your disorder, e.g. a residual volume scan for your bladder and transrectal ultrasound (where an ultrasound probe is inserted into your rectum to scan internally).
  • Biopsy – this is a small sample of tissue taken from the affected area, e.g. from the prostate during a transrectal ultrasound or transperineal template biopsy.
  • Flexible cystoscopy – By inserting a thin, flexible camera through the urethra, your consultant can view the inside of your bladder and make a diagnosis.

  • Lifestyle advice – muscle training and exercises may be helpful for patients with an overactive bladder.
  • Botox injections – this muscle tightening drug is an effective method of easing overactive bladder syndrome.
  • Bladder instillations – therapeutic solutions can be introduced directly into the bladder through a catheter to relieve painful bladder /urethral syndrome.
  • Surgical procedures.
