Research Interests

Professor McCollum’s research is in arterial and venous disease. He leads a research team of some 40 lecturers, fellows, scientists and technicians, and his collaborations are with various disciplines including particularly epidemiology, neuro-imaging, mental health and stroke medicine. Special research interests include:

A research team is investigating the role of cerebral emboli in the causation of both Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. A new team is being assembled to explore the importance of carotid plaque volume in the causation of stroke.

Biography

Professor Charles McCollum is a Consultant Vascular Surgeon with over 25 years’ experience. At aged only 32 he was appointed Consultant and Senior Lecturer in Surgery at Charing Cross Hospital, London. It was following this that he became Professor of Surgery in Manchester during 1989, specialising exclusively in vascular surgery. In addition to his interests in the full range of arterial and venous surgery, he has a special interest in carotid surgery, angioplasty, stenting, reconstruction of the aorta (including all the arteries to the brain, viscera & legs) endovascular aneurysm repair and peripheral artery disease in the legs.
Professor McCollum also has a special interest and expertise in the management of deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and in treating varicose veins, chronic venous insufficiency and venous leg ulcers.
