Professor McCollum was appointed Consultant & Senior Lecturer in Surgery at Charing Cross Hospital in London in 1983, aged only 32. He specialised exclusively in vascular surgery following his appointment as Professor of Surgery in Manchester in 1989. He now has nearly 30 years consultant experience in complex vascular surgery. He has perhaps the biggest practice in carotid surgery in the UK & specialises in reconstructions of the aorta including all arteries to the brain, viscera & legs.
His research is in arterial & venous disease. He leads a research team collaborating with various disciplines including epidemiology, neuro-imaging, mental health, stroke medicine & cardiology. Special research interests include: arterial & venous thrombosis, cerebral emboli & dementia, stroke & cerebral perfusion, shock & organ damage, carotid & extracranial arteries, venous disease, paradoxical embolism, wound healing & leg ulceration, cerebral injury in dialysis & blood transfusion therapy. -
