Kay studied Podiatry at Salford University qualifying in 1990. She worked in community and hospital podiatry in Central Manchester after graduation and developed interests in diabetes and biomechanics. During her time in Manchester Kay became a clinical and research member of the internationally renown Manchester Diabetic Foot Team lead by Professor Andrew Boulton, and was part of the team that developed the first Diabetic Foot Screening and Education Programme.

Kay then moved to York to lead the Hospital High Risk Foot Service and delivered woundcare. She subsequently enjoyed increasingly senior clinical roles in Tameside  and South Manchester then studied for a Masters degree and for a period moved to NHS management and then private consultancy where she supported clinical teams to measure and improve the quality of healthcare provision.

Following a period of refreshment Kay chose to return to clinical practice and in 2012 started the Cheshire Foot Clinic in Knutsford. She has subsequently developed a thriving private practice delivering a highly regarded, patient focused general podiatry service and receives referrals from general practice and secondary care colleagues as well as self-referring patients.
