Christel qualified as a dietitian in South Africa in 1997 and started her career as a clinical dietitian in a large district hospital together with setting up a successful private practice.  Her desire to enhance her knowledge and skills in dietetics prompted her move to the UK in 2001 where she started her career in the NHS as a Renal Specialist Dietitian, a role she continued in three different NHSTrusts over 14 years. She enjoyed helping patients with chronic kidney disease manage their complex nutritional requirements in addition to weight management, heart health and Coeliac Disease.

In 2014 Christel was appointed as the Adult Dietitian’s Acute and Rehabilitation Team leader at Manchester Royal Infirmary, where she was responsible for the overall clinical service management of the team, including specialist services in gastroenterology, oncology and critical care.  Her clinical caseload included the specialist lipid clinic and the Dietitian-led Coeliac clinic.

Christel has recently been promoted and appointed as the Professional Lead for Dietetics as well as the Head of the Nutrition and Dietetic Services at Wythenshawe Hospital (now part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust) and is looking forward to starting this new role in May 2019.

As a dietitian, Christel uses up-to-date scientific research on food, health, disease and translates this into practical guidance to enable people to make appropriate lifestyle and food choices  She is trained on the low FODMAP diet, an effective treatment, based on science that can help alleviate IBS symptoms.

Christel is passionate about nutrition and continues to keep her knowledge up to date by regularly attending clinical updates as well as writing her own blog called Nutritive Talk (  She is an active member of the British Dietetic Association and a number of specialist interest groups.  She has also been a visiting lecturer at the University of Chester.
